The Victorian shire council worst-affected by the Black Saturday bushfires is asking the State Government for a one-off payment of $14 million to keep it afloat.
The Murrindindi Shire Council says the payment has been recommended by an independent report that looked at the impact of the bushfire on its assets and rate base.
The report says the money could be invested and provide returns that would help the council keep future rate increases to a minimum.
The Murrindindi fire on Black Saturday, in February 2009, killed 40 people and destroyed 500 homes and a large amount of public infrastructure.
The shire includes the towns of Marysville, Kinglake, Kinglake West and Narbethong.
