A Muslim leader says text messages are circulating in Melbourne calling for another protest against the anti-Islamic film that has prompted violent demonstrations around the world.
Sheik Mohamadu Saleem from the Australian National Imam's Council, says he has seen a text attempting to arrange a protest outside the State Library in Melbourne this weekend.
The source of the message could not be traced.
Sheik Saleem says religious leaders are doing all they can to ensure any demonstration is peaceful, including contacting federal and state police, and school principals.
"We know some text messages [are] going around from unknown people and we have very strongly advised every mosque imam to please disregard any text messages from unknown people," he said.
Speaking in Melbourne at a joint press conference of Islamic and Coptic religious leaders, Sheik Saleem said although the film was offensive, violence is not acceptable.
"If there is a demonstration, we are telling everyone concerned, both the people who are going to the demonstration, organising demonstration, or people who are outside watching the demonstration, that it has to be peaceful," he said.
"If it is not peaceful, then don't go."
Six police officers were injured in violent protests against the US-made film in Sydney on Saturday.
In Sydney, Samier Dandan of the Lebanese Muslim Association called on all Muslim religious leaders to address the incident at Friday prayers and call for calm.
Police in Melbourne say they have contingency plans in place in case there are demonstrations and they are working with the local Muslim community to stay on top of the situation.
