Coroner to deliver finding in Wilson inquest

Posted September 19, 2012 07:41:58

The long-running inquest into the death of murdered Victorian backpacker David Wilson will conclude today, 18 years after he died.

Mr Wilson was kidnapped and murdered by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in 1994 along with two other hostages, Frenchman Jean-Michel Braquet and Briton Mark Slater.

They were held for two months before ransom negotiations collapsed and they were killed by their captors.

The inquest into his death was adjourned for more than ten years, to allow the court case against his murderers to take place in Cambodia.

Three men were eventually convicted.

The inquest has already been told that Wilson, 29, was killed after negotiations between Cambodian government authorities and the Khmer Rouge broke down.

But there are still questions about diplomatic interventions by the Australian Government.

Deputy State Coroner Iain West will hand down his findings today.
