Former winners Dunaden and Americain will have to prove themselves the equal of the great Makybe Diva if they are to win a second Melbourne Cup.
Dunaden, the reigning Cup champion and Americain, the 2010 winner, have been given the equal top-weight of 58kg for the 2012 running of the $6.2 million race.
In the past 40 years only two horses have won the Cup with 58kg or more, the most recent of them Makybe Diva in 2005.

Racing Victoria's Greg Carpenter says Americain carried the same weight last year.
"Americain went to 58 last year and ran a magnificent race to run fourth, giving Dunaden 3.5 kilos and was only beaten a length-and-a-half," he said.
"In fact, if you follow the world thoroughbred rankings, Americain was the highest-rated stayer in the world last year for his fourth finish in the Melbourne Cup."
Carpenter says Dunaden will carry 3.5 kilos more than he did when victorious last year.
"Dunaden last year followed the blueprint of Americain - won the Geelong Cup and then the Melbourne Cup with 54.5kg - and like Americain last year, I've progressed him 3.5kg in the weights to 58.
"It should always be a challenge to win the Melbourne Cup and more so to win it twice."
Peter Moody's former English galloper Manighar is next on the list with 57kg, while champion Sydney mare More Joyous has been allocated 56kg.
The next five horses in the weights are either international entries or imports who are now Australian-based.
The only other previous winner entered is nine-year-old Efficient, who won the 2007 Cup with 54.5kg and has 55kg this time.
Joint-favourite Mount Athos, another of the English entries, has 54kg and co-favourite Green Moon, an Irish import, has 53.5kg.
Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed, who is yet to race beyond 2,400 metres, has been allocated 54.5kg, while Australian Derby winner Ethiopia is the highest weighted four-year-old at 53.5kg.
There are a total of 151 entries for the Cup to be run at Flemington on November 6.
First declarations will be taken on October 9.
