The Victorian Taxi Association plans to have a purpose-built Melbourne cab on the streets in the next five years.
The push for improved driver safety followed the stabbing murder of a veteran cabbie at Mount Waverley in August.
The association has submitted a design wish list to seven different car makers.
New features will include separate compartment for the driver and more luggage space.
Association chief executive Neil Sache says two manufacturers have already expressed interest.
"The industry decided it was time to look at why drivers were being attacked and what the passengers felt about the vehicles they were being transported in," he said.
Mr Sache says the taxi could be similar to a purpose-built New York cab made by Nissan.
"We want capacity to sit six people in the back, three rows facing each other," he said.
"We want safety for people stepping out of the vehicle with grab hand rails and lights.
"We want split system air conditioning from the front part and the rear part. [And] USB ports so people can charge their phones."
Victorian Taxi Association says the car does not need to be Australian-made, but needs to be readily available.
