Vic police and Islamic leaders urge for peaceful rally

Posted September 18, 2012 21:02:31

Victorian Islamic leaders have told police they do not support a planned gathering in Melbourne this weekend.

Police have confirmed a planned anti-Islamophobia gathering by members of the Islamic community will take place in Melbourne on Sunday.

Police have been monitoring social media websites and other communications since Sydney's violent protests at the weekend.

The rally in Sydney on Saturday turned ugly when protesters clashed with police.

"People have a right to protest but that right must be exercised peacefully", said Deputy Commissioner Tim Cartwright.

Commander Jeff Forti met with community leaders and religious elders on Tuesday who advised him they do not support the gathering.

However, police say they agree a gathering of this type should be conducted in a peaceful manner.

"Community leaders agreed that violence should not be a part of any gathering people are taking part in," Commander Forti said.

"Victoria Police respects the beliefs of all religious communities whilst they are acting lawfully but violence will not be tolerated," he said.

Commander Forti has invited any group wishing to protest or gather to consult with police before-hand to ensure a peaceful well managed event.

Police will continue to monitor the situation and will respond accordingly to ensure community safety.

Islamic and Coptic leaders joined forces in Melbourne condemning Sydney's weekend violence.

They all denounced the controversial film which has sparked protests around the globe.

The leaders also said they stood side by side, condemning any sort of violence, and said they were shocked by Sydney's violent demonstrations.

Confirmation of the rally comes less than 24 hours after police said they were ready to act and had contingency plans in place.

The Deputy Commissioner on Monday said police will take action quickly and firmly should there be any violent behaviour.

Sheik Mohamadu Saleem from the Australian National Imam's Council told Tuesday's joint press conference of religious leaders that violence was not acceptable.

"If there is a demonstration, we are telling everyone concerned, that it has to be peaceful," he said

"If it is not peaceful, then don't go.
