Melbourne's Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle, says an investigation into allegations of electoral roll tampering shows the system is working effectively.
The Melbourne City Council has discovered irregularities in the voters' roll, with around 400 voting applications in dispute.
It is alleged some of those may have been submitted by the same person.
Mayor Robert Doyle the matter is being handled appropriately.
"The fact that it came to our attention is the thing people should focus on. The system actually works," he said.
"When there were irregularities about people enrolling to vote, the city picked that up, the system found that, and quite properly referred it to the local government inspectorate."
