Women are being encouraged to stand in local council elections to be held across Victoria next month.
Nominations open on Thursday and the Victorian Local Governance Association has set a target of having at least one female candidate in 90 per cent of wards in the state.
The association's president, Samantha Dunn, says less than a third of Victorian councillors are women.
"I think in the past it's been an area that women haven't contemplated seriously as being part of, but I think they need to," she told ABC local radio.
"Certainly councils should be representative of the broader population and women make up 51 per cent of that population and I think it's important they're at the decision-making table."
