A consultant for the petrol industry says he expects Shell's Geelong refinery to close in the near future.
Shell executive, Mark Williams, has been quoted in the Financial Review as saying the Geelong refinery is a "borderline" proposition.
The managing director of HEH Australian Petroleum Consultancy, Kevin Hughes, says the comments mean the refinery is slated to close soon.
"The reality is it's cheaper to import refined product than it is to have it refined in Australia," he told ABC local radio.
"It costs millions and millions of dollars to bring refineries up to standard and it's just a matter of whether or not it's economically sustainable to do it."
