The RACV has named a railway level crossing at Murrumbeena, in Melbourne's south-east, as the city's most congested traffic area.
The crossing, at the corner of Murrumbeena and Neerim Roads, topped the list in a RACV survey, followed by a stretch of the Chandler Highway at Kew.
RACV spokesman Dave Jones says six of the top ten most congested roads are linked to level crossings.
He says the State Government should aim to remove at least five of them each year to make Melbourne's roads safer.
"There [are] over 170 across metropolitan Melbourne we've been told and a program of five a year for 10 years would at least enable us to knock off the worst," he said.
"But obviously there's a much bigger problem that needs to be looked at."
Plans are already underway to remove three level crossings by 2014, including two at Mitcham and one at Springvale.
