Museum Victoria has acquired the jumper worn by former St Kilda football player Nicky Winmar on the day he famously responded to racial abuse in 1993.
Winmar lifted his jumper, pointed to his skin and replied "I'm proud to be black."
The gesture during a match against Collingwood on April 17 1993, is now celebrated as a stand against racism in sport.
Museum Victoria's chief executive officer, Dr Patrick Greene, says the authenticated jumper will be displayed in an upcoming First Peoples exhibition which opens in July 2013.
"This jumper and the story associated with it represents one of those turning points in attitude to race and indeed combating racism in sport," he told ABC local radio.
The jumper was sold by Southeby's Australia on behalf of an American basketball player who got it in a jumper exchange.
The company says proceeds from the sale will go directly to a foundation to fund a documentary on racism in sport.
