A Victorian coroner has found there is no reason to criticise the Federal Government for not doing enough to save a Victorian backpacker who was murdered by the Khmer Rouge 18 years ago.
David Wilson was taken hostage with two other foreigners, Frenchman Jean-Michel Braquet and Briton Mark Slater, when the Khmer Rouge attacked a train they were travelling on in Cambodia in 1994.
The three men were held for two months before ransom negotiations collapsed and they were killed by their captors.
The inquest into Mr Wilson's death was adjourned for more than 10 years to allow the court case against his murderers to take place in Cambodia.
Three men were eventually convicted.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was criticised at the time for not doing enough to secure his release.
But Victoria's Deputy State Coroner, Iain West, has found the Government cannot be criticised for not paying a ransom, or for not taking other diplomatic measures, such as threatening to withdraw foreign aid.
However Alastair Gaisford, who was consul in the Australian embassy in Cambodia in 1994, has described the coroner's findings as an "absolute travesty of justice".
"David Wilson was kidnapped and killed in six weeks," he said.
"We took 15 weeks to get his body back.
"This coroner took 870 weeks to whitewash DFAT and the Government."
