Budget cuts no threat to firefighting services

Posted September 19, 2012 14:13:04

The State Government has reiterated that front-line firefighting services will not be affected by multi-million dollar budget cuts.

The call comes after the Lodden Mallee Country Fire Authority issued a letter to employees outlining a tightening of non-operational spending.

The CFA and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) are set to lose a total of $66 million in funding next financial year.

Deputy Premier Peter Ryan says the public's safety will not be put at risk.

"The CFA now has the second-largest budget in its history the only one bigger was last year in the immediate aftermath of Black Saturday," he said.

"We will ensure that the CFA and MFB are resourced in a manner that will not in any way detract from its front line capacity."
