Knight ordered to pay costs in court battle

Updated September 20, 2012 10:59:00

Hoddle Street killer Julian Knight has been ordered to pay the Government's legal costs for his last court battle to get early release from prison.

In May, he lost a bid to force prison authorities to review his status as a high-risk prisoner when he becomes eligible for parole in 2014.

Knight is serving a minimum 27 year term in maximum security and is deemed a high-risk prisoner, after he was convicted for shooting seven people and injuring 19 others in the Melbourne suburb of Clifton Hill in 1987.

When he lost the case, Knight objected to paying the courts costs and questioned how his prison wage could cover it.

But in the Victorian Supreme Court today, Justice Katharine Williams ruled Knight should cover the legal costs of the Corrections Commissioner.

Justice Williams ruled Knight's personal predicament does not amount to "exceptional circumstances" to prevent him from paying the court costs.

Knight was declared a vexatious litigant in 2004 and requires the court approval to go to trial.

The Government is looking at tightening up the law to prevent him from going to court so often.

Knight will return to court today to seek leave to begin another court fight.
